OpenCity is a 3D simulator program that creates cities.
As in any simulation program the goal is to build something (a city in this case) and get money to keep growing.
It offers a wide variety of tools which can be selected through its Circle selection tool that appears when clicking the mouse's right button. The first thing to do after start is to define three areas: residential, commercial and industrial, then construct the streets that will communicate the areas and power them by energizing the industrial area only. And your city will start growing up.
It also has an option in its main menu to clear your city and start a new one, to save your city, to load a previous built city or simply exit the program. This nice city simulator didn’t offer too much information about its tools or menus, so it's recommendable to read the available information in order to know more about. There are many different views and some tools can be called by pressing some keys on the keyboard.
Its GUI is simple but it’s not easy nor friendly to users. Its installation process is very simple and easy to perform; however take care about recommendations on video cards, because in some computers with low video performance it won’t run. Its documentation is not available with the program, however there is some available on its website but is not very detailed.
OpenCity works on Linux, MAC OS, Wine and Windows (2000/XP and later) platforms.
Pros
- Has necessary tools to create an entire city
- It’s open source so is an excellent beginning
Cons
- It needs more documentation oriented to users. There is no reference for the tools, menus and keys on the keyboard available to use. And there are no tooltips on menus. In some computers performance is not very good
